Details Emerge Regarding Basic Instinct Reboot

Joe Eszterhas, the screenwriter behind the original Basic Instinct, has shed some light on what audiences can expect from the upcoming reimagining of the iconic thriller.

According to Eszterhas, the new film will feature not only the return of Catherine Tramell—the character famously portrayed by Sharon Stone—but also her daughter, Jezebel. He offered no further specifics regarding the plot.

News of the project first surfaced in 2025. Earlier this spring, Eszterhas claimed that Emerald Fennell, the director of Wuthering Heights, was attached to helm the reboot; however, her representatives have since refuted these reports.

Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the original Basic Instinct debuted in 1992. The narrative centers on a detective (Michael Douglas) who becomes dangerously entangled with a novelist (Stone) who is the primary suspect in a brutal murder case.

The film grossed $352 million globally, cementing its status as a definitive entry in the erotic thriller genre. A sequel followed in 2006, though it was widely panned by critics.
