David Robert Mitchell, the visionary director behind It Follows, Under the Silver Lake, and the upcoming thriller They Follow, has been tapped to pen the screenplay for the third installment of the Five Nights at Freddy’s horror franchise.
According to reports from World of Reel, the news was confirmed by actor Skeet Ulrich. He further noted that the upcoming film will feature significant screen time for both his character and that of Matthew Lillard.
Despite facing a lukewarm reception from professional critics, the franchise—adapted from the hit indie horror game series—has proven its remarkable resilience, consistently thriving regardless of review scores. The original Five Nights at Freddy’s shattered expectations with a record-breaking $80 million opening weekend, even with a simultaneous day-and-date release on Peacock. Meanwhile, the sequel underscored the series’ massive commercial appeal by raking in $236 million at the global box office against a modest budget of approximately $36-50 million.
