David Harbour Returning for Violent Night 2

Hollywood has explored almost every possible version of a Santa Claus movie over the years. Viewers have seen good Santa, Bad Santa, Tim Allen Santa, and even evil robot Santa. In 2022, Violent Night combined the character with the gritty action-hero story of Die Hard and the combat style of the John Wick movies. The film was a fresh spin on the genre, and a sequel is arriving four years later to take the story in an even more surprising direction.

Violent Night 2 has a very strong Western vibe, returning director Tommy Wirkola told Polygon as part of our 2026 Fall Preview.

What’s Violent Night 2 all about?

After unleashing his inner John Wick in Violent Night, Santa (David Harbour) takes things too far and gets put on the naughty list himself, which strips him of his magic powers and puts Christmas in peril. Santa winds up stuck in a shopping mall where he faces off against a dangerous gangster played by Jared Harris. The film also introduces Mrs. Claus, played by Kristen Bell.

Ahead of Violent Night 2‘s release on Dec. 4, 2026, Polygon spoke with Wirkola about the sequel for our 2026 Fall Preview.

Santa goes full Katniss

In an exclusive image shared with Polygon, Santa rides up an escalator while preparing to shoot a bow and arrow. This marks a pivot from Skullcrusher, the ancient hammer he used against criminals in Violent Night. Wirkola told Polygon that coming up with the hook took time before co-screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller delivered the winning idea.

It actually took a bit of searching before we landed on that particular idea. A few scenarios were discussed and even outlined, stuff that didn’t end up being strong enough, but when Pat and Josh finally presented that one idea, along with the mall setting, we knew we had our way in. We had a lot of ideas on characters, arcs and where we wanted to go emotionally, and this approach allowed us to explore all that in a fun way.

Why Violent Night 2 is a Western

Violent Night riffed on Die Hard by placing Santa in the middle of a hostage situation. The sequel takes things in a different direction while staying true to the spirit of the original.

It’s definitely in the sub-genre of ‘mall-movies,’ and aside from this obviously being a Christmas action-movie first and foremost, it also has a very strong Western vibe, where Santa is our lone hero riding into town (the mall), helping the villagers (shop-owners) in need.

A violent neo-Western set in a mall where Santa shoots criminals with a bow and arrow is officially on the holiday wishlist.
