Danny Pudi Gives Hopeful Update on Community Movie

Community has maintained a lasting presence since its NBC sitcom run. The series built a devoted fanbase during its six seasons on TV. Years after the show ended, viewers still quote and meme it. Four years after Peacock officially announced a Community movie, at least one cast member remains convinced that the project will happen.

The series ran from 2009 to 2015. It followed a group of students at Greendale Community College. The second season introduced the phrase “six seasons and a movie.” That line became a mantra while the show survived multiple cancellations and network changes. Community reached six seasons, but the movie proved more difficult to produce.

Peacock announced the movie in September 2022. Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong were attached to return alongside creator Dan Harmon and writer Andrew Guest. The project has received occasional updates, but it has not started filming.

Danny Pudi still believes the Community movie will happen

Danny Pudi played pop-culture-obsessed Greendale student Abed Nadir. In an interview with Polygon, Pudi admitted that he often learns about the movie from fans instead of the people making it.

In typical Community fashion, I think people know about the Community movie or updates about the world online faster than I do. So sometimes I’ll just ask people like, ‘Did we do it already? Are we in it? Have we filmed it? Are we waiting? Are we in post-production?’

Pudi also mentioned that seeing the show live on and connect with new generations has been incredible.

The cast remains excited about getting back together. Pudi noted that a few recent opportunities have made everyone more eager to reunite. He remains optimistic about the film.

So I’m hopeful. I believe it will happen. I’m very much an optimist and I think this is going to happen.

That optimism persists despite another scheduling roadblock earlier this year. In March, Community writer Andrew Guest explained on The Watch podcast that production came very close to shooting before a scheduling conflict with a cast member forced a delay. Guest stated that the filmmakers want the entire ensemble together because their chemistry is essential to Community.

There is still no release date or confirmed production date for the Community movie. If Pudi is correct, the show’s most persistent joke may eventually become a reality.
