Kelly spent years developing this narrative after shelving plans for a traditional sequel film. He hopes the book will eventually inspire an animated or motion-capture adaptation, followed by a live-action movie set 28 years after the original.

Previous attempts to expand the franchise met with mixed results. S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale debuted directly to video in 2009. The story focused on Donnie’s younger sister Samantha without Richard Kelly’s participation. Critics gave the film a 13% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
