Critics’ reviews for the new Sense and Sensibility adaptation have been released

The first wave of international reviews for the new film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility has emerged online. The latest reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic novel is set to hit theaters abroad later this week.

As of this writing, the film holds an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 73 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics have characterized the adaptation as “grounded,” “restrained,” and “naturalistic.” However, some reviewers pointed to a sense of emotional detachment, suggesting that the film’s measured tone occasionally obscures the characters’ deeper internal struggles.

Set against the backdrop of 18th-century England, the story follows the Dashwood sisters as they navigate the complexities of life, love, and social standing following the death of their father and the subsequent loss of the family fortune.

The ensemble cast features Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esme Creed-Miles, George MacKay, Frank Dillane, Caitríona Balfe, and Fiona Shaw, among others. The project is helmed by director Georgia Oakley (known for Blue Jean). The most iconic cinematic version of the novel remains the 1995 production starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.
