Companions in The Outer Worlds 2 Can Kill the Player
Obsidian Entertainment has confirmed that companion relationships in The Outer Worlds 2 will develop in dramatic ways — potentially leading to irreversible outcomes.
In an interview, game director Matt Singh and Brandon Adler explained that companion characters will behave as autonomous individuals, each with their own goals, values and motivations — up to and including the possibility of attempting to kill the protagonist.
If the player’s choices align with a companion’s beliefs, that ally will remain loyal and fight at the player’s side; if not, they may first object, then grow distant, and ultimately become hostile toward the protagonist.
Obsidian’s aim is to make The Outer Worlds 2 feel more authentic by giving companions real narrative and moral weight. Conflicts will unfold gradually: characters will express discontent through conversations, ultimatums and specific demands, offering chances to mend relationships or to accept a definitive split.
The intent behind this design is to create dynamic, coherent relationships where moral decisions meaningfully influence the world’s responses — not merely tweak dialogue lines or endings.
