Community Update #36: A Very Moddy Christmas

Community Update #36: A Very Moddy Christmas

Hello, friends.

The air is getting crisper and the holiday decorations are appearing earlier each year — and we’re all for it. It’s been a long, eventful year: Baldur’s Gate 3 added twelve new subclasses, implemented full cross‑play, and introduced a photo mode in what we’re calling the final patch.

We also launched Larian: Channel From Hell — a weekly stream where you’ve glimpsed into our chaos, met members of the team, and watched Aoife Wilson push through a brutal Dark Urge run.

But the real stars have often been your mods — they’ve brought joy, bewilderment, and more than a little pain. Many of us still wince at the memory of being flattened by a muscle car.

Before we wrap up 2025, here are some of the standout mod moments you’ve created.

Devs of Christmas — Four‑Hour Honour Mode Stream

To kick off the festive season we’re hosting a livestream party — you’re invited. Pull on your ugliest Christmas jumper, brew some hot cocoa, and settle in for a four‑hour session as Senior Communications Developer Aoife Wilson recruits devs from across Larian Studios (bribed with cheese and merriment) to attempt an Honour Mode run.

Streaming live on December 3 at 2:00 PM GMT — every death hands the controller to the next challenger. Nothing says holiday spirit like Myrkul finishing you off, as my gran used to say.

This will be our final stream of the year, as the Community Team heads to The Game Awards — where we’ve been nominated for Best Community Support!

Being nominated for a third consecutive year is a tremendous honour.

Modding Moments

Bunnies Gate 3

After catching the Patch 7 animated trailer, mod author 0iml decided giant bunnies belong on the Sword Coast permanently. Hide and seek takes on a new meaning with 126 bunnies (and three secret ones) scattered about — or install it, forget you did, and let surprise fluff brighten your playthrough.

Pool Floaties

Both stylish and absurdly practical — well, in a puddle. baeator’s Pool Floaties adds four inflatable hat options for the helmet slot, each with distinct stats. For a cheeky combo, equip the Goostarion Floatie Hat to get Astarion’s starting armour, then dye it to match.

Egg Magic: Clownify

Created by Bugby128, this delightfully unsettling mod lets you eat a clown egg and unlock new cantrips that paint your face with clown makeup. We won’t attempt to justify the imagery — only to say it lingers in the mind.

Withers Big Naturals

MaybeeAdam’s mod has a knack for causing gasps when you stumble into the Dank Crypt and forget what’s installed. It’s a hilarious shock — and one we wouldn’t swap for anything.

Car Wildshape

Thanks to wa_rouk, you can recruit a vehicular cavalcade — Carlach, Gale Decarios, Ascarion, Shadowkart, Vehicwyll, Lane’zel, and more. We have a soft spot for Carlach, even if she’s prone to occasional vehicular mayhem.

Handsome Astarion

A timeless favourite: FR05T has given Astarion a glow‑up that extends even to his character portrait. It never fails to catch us by surprise — in the best way.

All‑rounder Owlbear Beanie

We originally installed this for the cuteness factor, only to discover chunyou enchanted the beanies with substantial luck bonuses. Who cares about strict balance when you look this endearing?

Want an owlbear beanie of your own? These are inspired by the very real Owlbear beanies available in the Larian merch store.

Such a Tease — Raphael redressing & Raphameow (Raphael with cat ears)

We have no technical defense for enabling these. He did warn “down comes the claw,” but not exactly whose. Thanks to kariimatcha for Raphameow and to Nikjima for the sultrier cambion look — both mods are crowd‑pleasers.

DinoScratch

chunyou stitched adorable dinosaur pyjamas for Scratch — perfect for chilly campfires. Watching him trot about with a dino tail while Volo performs questionable field surgery never fails to amuse.

Plasma Weapons — Darkh Set

Skirbie’s far‑from‑subtle mod adds giant, glowing swords and themed attire — a clearly legally distinct set of overpowered blades to swing about with flair.

Skirbie’s Vintage Firearms Pack

Also from Skirbie — we taught Gale to wield a gun. The results were predictably chaotic.

BaldGate3

After all, it is BALDur’s Gate 3. wa_rouk’s mod shaves companions and key NPCs bald — and somehow, everyone pulls it off spectacularly.

Evelyn’s Monarch — Grenade Launcher

Nothing spices up a co‑op run like an accidental grenade launcher incident. Skirbie’s Evelyn’s Monarch (available on consoles and PC) has a habit of turning anyone within five meters into very unfortunate confetti.

Modding In Numbers

You modders have been extraordinarily prolific. As we close the year, mod.io hosts 10,000 Baldur’s Gate 3 mods and over 350 million downloads. Give yourselves a round of applause — and maybe a celebratory dram.
