Classic Warner Bros. Series Reimagined as Chibi Anime

The world’s most famous Great Dane is no stranger to transformation. Over the decades, we have seen Scooby-Doo evolve from a clumsy pup into a CGI lead, a live-action hero, and even a guest star alongside real-world celebrities. While the franchise previously explored Japanese artistry through collaborations with Mook Animation, the mystery-solving canine is now set for a complete “chibi” reimagining in the upcoming series, Scooby-Doo! Gokko.

Formally announced during a Miss Frandy cosmetics event in Brazil, Scooby-Doo! Gokko is currently slated for a 2027 debut. According to reports from TVlaint, the project will pivot to the comedic antics of Shaggy and Scooby, adopting a miniature, stylized aesthetic similar to the Tom & Jerry Gokko shorts. The term “Gokko” translates to imaginative play or “pretend,” a branding label Warner Bros. has embraced for its catalog of classic characters reimagined through a playful anime lens.

This isn’t the first time the Mystery Inc. crew has leaned into Eastern influences. At the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, fans were teased with Go-Go Mystery Machine—a series that envisioned the duo traveling through Japan on a culinary quest while battling mythical Yokai. That project was set to introduce Scooby’s uncle, Daisuke-Doo, alongside new allies Etsuko and Toshiro. Although updates on that specific series have been sparse since the initial reveal, the announcement of Gokko confirms that Warner Bros. remains dedicated to blending its legendary Western IPs with Japanese animation styles.

This creative direction aligns with a broader trend at Warner Bros. Discovery to localize iconic franchises for a global, anime-loving audience. Following the success of ventures like Suicide Squad Isekai and the Batman Ninja films, Scooby-Doo! Gokko represents the next step in the studio’s ongoing commitment to cross-cultural storytelling.
