Bloodborne Animated Movie Sets Director

While Bloodborne remains on the PlayStation 4, its movie adaptation is moving forward. YouTuber Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin is producing the R-rated animated film alongside PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation. In an interview with IGN, McLoughlin shared updates on the project announced at CinemaCon in April.

“Things are obviously much more along the pipeline than they were back then,” McLoughlin said. “I personally would love to just say everything as a fan of this thing, but then there’s no expectation, or there’s no fun in the process. So we definitely have a lot more stuff mapped out where we’re going with the story, and there are people in place to make this thing happen.”

While he did not specify who is attached to the project, he added that, “Hopefully, sooner than later, we can have announcements where we talk about who’s involved and where it’s going, and little teases of the story and where we’re at with that.”

Do we know any concrete story details about the Bloodborne movie?

Despite keeping specifics quiet, McLoughlin emphasized his desire to respect the world and setting of Bloodborne. “I am proud of the work I’ve been doing on it,” he said. “I think it’s such an interesting job to have, and for me, it’s fun to do. It can be really stressful as well at the same time, because you’re taking on such a monumental IP. And I am just there to be like, ‘Hey, we need this pinprick perfect.’ Will we ever get something perfect? I don’t know. It’s probably impossible to get everyone’s expectations into one central pillar, but as someone who’s brought on to do this job, I’m right in the position where I need to be, and we’re poised to have something really cool.”

He also hinted that the adaptation might avoid a direct retelling of the game, referencing recent adaptations that took creative liberties. “At the end of the day, it’s all ‘Why are we adapting it?’” McLoughlin said. “Whenever there’s leeway in the story, and there’s latitude to tell different tales within universes, I think that’s always most interesting. I don’t really ever want to take an IP and just redo the game story. I think we’ve seen that happen so many times. I’m not going to name names of things, but people already have adaptations in their brains, but it just never really works out. Something like Fallout or Resident Evil are really good examples recently.”

Zach Cregger chose to avoid a direct adaptation with Resident Evil, helping the movie become the best-received and highest-grossing film adaptation in the series. The Fallout TV show adopted a similar model. It is canonical to the series but follows new characters instead of the protagonists from the games. Because Bloodborne delivers much of its narrative through vague item descriptions and subtext, creators have ample space to flesh out its universe.

Are there other upcoming adaptations of FromSoftware games?

Two additional FromSoftware games, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring, have received adaptation orders. Sekiro: No Defeat is an anime series produced by Qzil.la and directed by Kenichi Kutsuna. A theatrical cut of the show debuted in Japanese theaters on September 4, and the eight-episode series will premiere globally on Crunchyroll in January 2027.

A24 is producing an Elden Ring film directed by Alex Garland, who worked on Civil War and Annihilation. Early reports indicate it will be A24’s most expensive picture ever, boasting a $200 million budget. Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, and Nick Offerman star in undisclosed roles. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on March 3, 2028.
