Cities: Skylines II Development Update Header

Greetings, Mayors!

Six months have passed since the team at Iceflake Studios assumed the helm of Cities: Skylines II. Our primary mission during this period has been to revitalize the gameplay experience, resolve persistent technical hurdles, and construct a robust framework that allows for long-term optimization and feature expansion.

Leading the development of such an expansive title has been a deeply fulfilling endeavor. While the scale of the project was initially formidable, your unwavering support and constructive feedback have made this journey incredibly rewarding. In this edition of City Corner, we’re reflecting on our progress over the last half-year and spotlighting the significant milestones that have shaped the game’s evolution.

A Retrospective on Our Updates

Our debut major update, First Frost, prioritized both simulation depth and player experience. We successfully mitigated long-standing issues like “death waves,” rebalanced bicycle logistics, enhanced nocturnal visibility, and overhauled weather and fog rendering. Additionally, the introduction of the Color Customization tool marked the beginning of your ability to personalize the visual identity of your cities, complemented by refined landscaping tools and greater flexibility in tree placement.

The momentum continued with the Anniversary Update, which delivered one of the community’s most-requested features: the ability to toggle road zoning for finer control over urban development. We also unveiled our first exclusive asset, the Iceflake Arena, and integrated an in-game Encyclopedia to provide both novice and veteran mayors with instant access to system documentation.

As spring arrived, our focus pivoted toward administrative agency and player-led customization. The Spring Cleaning patch introduced the Historic Building feature, safeguarding your favorite structures from automatic upgrades. We also empowered users with granular UI scaling and transparency settings, alongside a closer collaboration with the Paradox Mods team to streamline mod management and distribution.

The Morning Dew update further refined the user experience by expanding asset filtering and polishing visual fidelity, specifically addressing shadow rendering artifacts. While it was a more streamlined release, it played a vital role in smoothing out the day-to-day city-building flow.

Most recently, Summer Solstice brought significant aesthetic and mechanical improvements. By completely reworking terrain rendering, we achieved higher fidelity in shading and depth perception. Furthermore, the new terrain painting tools allow for seamless texture blending, providing a powerful new creative instrument for both the base game and the Editor.

Beyond these major milestones, every patch has included vital under-the-hood stability and performance optimizations. The introduction of the Benchmarking tool in Spring Cleaning was a key step in our ongoing commitment to improving frame rates, while behind-the-scenes adjustments to pathfinding—such as those in Morning Dew—have quietly improved the efficiency of your city’s traffic systems.

Data & Development Statistics

We know our community values transparency, so let’s examine the numbers. Since January, we have successfully resolved over 200 bugs and rolled out more than 40 new features and system improvements.

As illustrated, the lion’s share of our bug-fixing efforts focused on the User Interface and core simulation mechanics—tackling issues ranging from stuck citizens and broken demand bars to visual anomalies like flickering shadows.

Our efforts regarding new content have been heavily weighted toward visual enhancement and UI functionality. These statistics represent a broad spectrum of work, from the integration of the Encyclopedia and Iceflake Arena to deeper rebalancing of the education and cycling policy systems.

The Road Ahead

As the summer wanes here in Finland, our development cycle remains in full swing. Our next update will be a smaller, focused release aimed at quality-of-life tweaks and minor simulation adjustments. We will dive into the specifics of that patch in an upcoming City Corner. Furthermore, our team is hard at work on the game’s first expansion; we look forward to sharing more details once that content is ready for primetime.

Thank you for being such an integral part of this journey. Here is to the next six months, the year ahead, and the bright future of Cities: Skylines II!
