Charli XCX Releases Second Original ‘Wuthering Heights’ Song for ‘Wild, Sexual, Gothic’ Film Trailer

Charli XCX Debuts “Chains of Love” in New Trailer for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights

Charli XCX has returned with another preview from the concept record she composed for Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The full trailer, released Thursday, Nov. 13, includes a previously unheard track titled “Chains of Love.”

The trailer opens on the windswept moors with Heathcliff and Catherine — portrayed by Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie — sitting together as a tense exchange about wealth and marriage unfolds. When Heathcliff hints he might “take a wife,” the film cuts into a brooding montage that traces the couple’s doomed, gothic romance.

At one point, Robbie’s Catherine cries, “Why did you leave me?” as Elordi pursues her through a storm; he answers, “Why did you betray your own heart?” — all underscored by Charli’s soaring, synth-driven chorus. The song repeats the line, “I know the chains of love won’t break,” in a powerful, atmospheric hook.

The full track was released for streaming the same day as the trailer. It follows the single “House,” a collaboration with John Cale of the Velvet Underground, which also appears on the Wuthering Heights concept album. That LP is scheduled to arrive Feb. 13, one day before the film opens in theaters.

On Nov. 12, Charli explained on Substack how the project began: after asking Fennell what she envisioned, the director suggested a single song — and Charli proposed an entire album. She described wanting to inhabit a darker, more gothic world: raw, sexual, distinctly British and literate in tone, a departure from her everyday life.

Charli questioned whether the collection should even be considered a traditional Charli XCX album, but said the label mattered less than the creative leap she’d taken. The result is a concept project that blurs persona, period mood and cinematic storytelling.
