Capcom Veteran Says Resident Evil – Code: Veronica Hurt the Franchise and Pushed RE5 and RE6 Toward Action

Former Capcom senior manager Miguel Corti says Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 grew in large part out of decisions made during work on Resident Evil – Code: Veronica.

The Resident Evil franchise began with survival horror games, but the concept changed over time. The series moved from a gloomy mansion and Raccoon City to large-scale action set in an African country and a Chinese metropolis.

Corti recently published a series of posts on social media. They drew the attention of Resident Evil fans because he explained the shift from survival horror to the action that players saw in Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6.

Corti noted that “everyone always mentions Resident Evil 3 and seems to forget about Code Veronica.” In his view, there is a direct link between Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 5 and RE 6. He said that “it was with Code Veronica that the franchise went off the rails, trying to fit as many locations and storylines as possible onto a single Dreamcast disc.” The game’s opening cinematic is a “parody of John Woo action movies and ‘Die Hard’ — there’s nothing horror about it.”

Corti believes this influenced RE5 and RE6, which became more action-oriented games. He also said that the “real problem” with Code Veronica is that “many developers” consider it the best entry before Resident Evil 4.

Corti admits to a bias against Code: Veronica. He believes the game had a negative effect on the franchise.

Resident Evil Veronica can be added to the Steam wishlist. Capcom has not yet announced an exact release date, but the release window is 2027. The game will be available on PC, as well as on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
