The project was announced in 2020, but the director has not given up hope of returning to it one day.

Taika Waititi told Inverse in an interview that work on his Star Wars film is on hold. He did not say who made that decision. During the conversation, he asked his representative whether he could share details, but he did not get permission and limited himself to this comment:

“It has been thoroughly frozen. I have about four other movies that I’m trying to make.”

Lucasfilm announced the project on May 4, 2020. Waititi originally worked on the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, but she left the project in 2023. Tony McNamara, the screenwriter of Poor Things, was later brought on. Kathleen Kennedy, then head of Lucasfilm, said the studio was ready to give Waititi as much time as he needed to develop the film. There have been no updates on the project since then.

Waititi does not plan to say goodbye to the galaxy far, far away for good. Asked about the prospects for his film, he answered:

“Ice ages end, too. Who knows?”

Upcoming releases in the franchise include season 2 of Ahsoka, which premieres on January 20, 2027, and Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling, scheduled for May 28 of the same year. Season 2 of the animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is also in the works. In addition, according to Hollywood media reports, filming could begin in 2027 on a new movie directed by Jon Watts from a script by Simon Kinberg, which is described as the tenth episode of the main saga.
