Dispatch Anniversary Update Adds Commentary Track, Storyboard Mode, and Mobile Port
Dispatch, last year’s superhero workplace comedy, turns one year old today. The game arrived in episodes, and its first batch landed on October 22. Critics and players welcomed it warmly. They praised the performances of a star-studded cast, among them Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul. It also filled a gap that Telltale Games left in the industry in recent years. To mark the occasion, developer AdHoc has revealed a package of anniversary content, and part of it is available now.
The first addition is storyboard mode, a new way to experience Dispatch. It lets you play the entire story using the original animatics, the rough placeholder sketches artists drew to line images up with the voice-over. It offers a rare look behind the curtain at how the game came together. Alongside it come DVD-style commentary tracks, recorded by the cast and crew to play over the game. They are full of jokes and observations about the production process. According to a press release, the commentary runs for more than 16 hours. It features members of the development team, such as art director Derek Stratton and creative directors Dennis Lenart and Nick Herman. Cast members including Aaron Paul, Laura Bailey, and Erin Yvette also take part.
Both storyboard and commentary modes are part of the deluxe edition, which you can upgrade to for $10.99. Each is available today.
If you haven’t tried Dispatch yet, there is a new opportunity. AdHoc has confirmed that the game arrives on iOS and Android on December 9. It has been rebuilt for touch controls and vertical play. The first half of the game is free, covering the first four episodes. Continuing past that point requires a $19.99 purchase.
Lastly, AdHoc unveiled new merchandise. It includes Dispatch: Design Works, a book made with publisher Lost in Cult that doubles as an art book and a “making-of” volume. A live concert of the game’s soundtrack is also planned in Los Angeles. The lineup features Thot Squad, Bershy, Primer, Caroline Kingsbury, Fartbarf, and Dispatch composer Andrew Arcadi, who will perform with the SDN Company Band. The show takes place at Avalon Hollywood on December 3. It won’t be livestreamed, so attending means buying a ticket. The press release says that people who signed up for updates at adhocstudio.com will get first access to tickets.
We were big fans of the game. Our review called it “one of the most compelling interactive dramas in years,” with the emotional weight of prestige television and a standout script. To learn more about how it was made, subscribers can read our interview with the studio in the Ninja Gaiden 4 issue of Game Informer.
