Vault Comics Announces Dungeon Crawler Carl Series for Next Year

Even if you haven’t read the books, you’ve probably heard of Dungeon Crawler Carl. Matt Dinniman’s LitRPG series has become a cultural juggernaut, and it keeps growing. LitRPG is a genre defined by its use of video game and tabletop RPG mechanics. Besides a television adaptation, the series is now getting a comic book.

Variety announced that Vault Comics will publish an ongoing Dungeon Crawler Carl comic. It will serialize the existing webtoon adaptation, which keeps writer Tevagah and artwork by Laurel Pursuit Studios. Kuzomari will join the series to help adapt the art to the larger comic-book format. Nathan Gooden will draw the main covers, and plenty of variants will be available.

For newcomers, here is the official synopsis of the series:

Dungeon Crawler Carl follows Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world — or just get to the next level — in a video game-like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that’s actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy.

Dinniman commented on the latest adaptation of his novels: “Entering the comic space is nothing short of amazing. The fact that I get to work with some of the greatest creators and artists working today feels like a dream.” The first issue will be double-sized at 48 pages. It is set for release in January 2027.

When does the next Dungeon Crawler Carl book release?

Dinniman is actively working on the ninth book in the series, but it has no release date yet. It is currently called The Beautiful Place, and the author has shared the prologue and early chapters. The most recent book came out this year. If Dinniman keeps his usual pace, the ninth book could arrive in late 2027. He has said it will begin the conclusion of the series, which should end with the tenth book.

Other Dungeon Crawler Carl projects are still in the works. At New York Comic Con, Universal Global Television scripted series chief Kelsey Balance revealed that shooting could begin as early as next year. The series also has a solid tabletop RPG.
