Call of Duty: Warzone Officially Shutting Down Next Month on PS4 and Xbox One

The immensely popular free-to-play battle royale title, Call of Duty: Warzone, is officially bidding farewell to the previous generation of consoles. Alongside the initial reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 back in May, Activision confirmed that the tactical shooter will cease operations on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.

Console support on these legacy machines will officially wrap up shortly after the debut of Modern Warfare 4‘s inaugural season. With the upcoming mainline installment slated for an October 23 release, Warzone will transition exclusively to current-generation hardware, remaining fully playable on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC.

This phase-out by Activision and the development studios comes as little shock to the community. Modern Warfare 4 is similarly bypassing older hardware, charting a course for the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

For modern hardware owners, Warzone will evolve rather than disappear. Starting with the first season of Modern Warfare 4, the battle royale environment will seamlessly integrate franchise content and seasonal progression, creating a deeply unified ecosystem between the two releases, according to official statements from the development team.

New players on PS4 and Xbox One can no longer download Warzone, though veterans of the platform can keep dropping in until the debut of MW4 Season 1. The in-game store for these legacy versions is scheduled for removal in June. Even so, developers have confirmed that users will maintain access to free Battle Pass tiers, allowing them to unlock fresh weaponry throughout the remainder of the Black Ops 7 seasons.

Originally introduced to the gaming landscape in 2020, the initial iteration of Call of Duty: Warzone was retired in 2023 following the rollout of its successor, Warzone 2.0. That subsequent subtitle was eventually dropped, leaving the streamlined identity simply known today as Call of Duty: Warzone.

The legendary franchise makes a triumphant return.
