Paramount — the studio behind Top Gun: Maverick and the recently canceled Halo live-action series — confirmed in September that it has partnered with Activision to develop a Call of Duty feature film. The studio has since named Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day) to direct the project.
Berg will also co-write and produce the adaptation alongside Taylor Sheridan, who is attached as a writer and producer. Sheridan’s credits include Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Landman. Producer David Glasser is also on board to shepherd the production.
According to the press release, Berg and Sheridan are longtime collaborators and friends, having worked together on acclaimed projects such as Hell or High Water — which earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay — as well as Wind River.
Paramount hasn’t specified which era or storyline from the Call of Duty franchise the film will adapt. With the series spanning World War II, Vietnam, near‑future sci‑fi, and Modern Warfare–style contemporary conflicts, filmmakers have a wide range of tonal and narrative possibilities. Given Berg’s previous work, a Modern Warfare–inspired approach seems especially plausible, but the creative direction remains to be revealed.
