So, you fancy yourself a virtual bus driver? Listen up: this isn’t some leisurely Sunday drive. Forget everything you learned from arcade racers; you’re now operating a heavy-duty passenger vehicle. Between managing a strict schedule, navigating tight urban streets, and keeping your passengers satisfied, this is one of the most demanding roles in the simulation genre. Think you have the nerves for it?

That is likely the welcome speech a crusty veteran would give any rookie attempting to conquer the latest batch of bus sims. Without such a mentor, I simply dove headfirst into The Bus and Bus Bound, all while keeping a watchful eye on the upcoming Bus Simulator 27.

It is, undeniably, an excellent era for virtual transport. The Bus, brought to us by TML-Studios and Aerosoft—the team behind Fernbus Coach Simulator—officially launched in March after a lengthy five-year early access period. Meanwhile, Stillalive Studios, veterans of the Bus Simulator series, released Bus Bound in April. With Simteract, the developers of Train Life, preparing Bus Simulator 27 for later this year, the competition is fierce. Each title carries serious simulation pedigree, but which one actually deserves your attention?

While both games offer distinct visions of public transit, Bus Bound leans heavily into an arcade-like experience. In its fictional city of Emberville, fare collection is non-existent, leaving you to focus entirely on maintaining a high approval rating from passengers. Smooth driving and adherence to traffic laws bolster your reputation, which in turn unlocks new routes and city districts. It’s a gamified loop that feels rewarding, if simplified.

Conversely, The Bus stays true to the simulation roots. Its "Economy" mode provides a classic rags-to-riches structure where you manage your own transit business from a modest depot, aiming to build a regional empire. It’s methodical, demanding, and far more focused on financial sustainability.

The driving physics in The Bus feel significantly weightier, demanding precision; misjudge a turn in the narrow bus lanes, and you’ll be paying for repairs out of pocket. However, the experience can feel unpolished. Its tutorials are sparse, assuming a level of prior knowledge that may alienate newcomers, and the interface is unnecessarily cluttered. Furthermore, performance on Windows can be spotty, particularly during weather effects.

Both titles struggle to make their urban environments feel truly alive. While Bus Bound manages to evolve its map better over time, both games suffer from static world design that contradicts their marketing promises. The traffic AI in Bus Bound, however, is a notable highlight; vehicles respond naturally to your turn signals and navigate busy intersections with refreshing competence.

NPC behavior is another shared weakness. Whether it's passengers spinning in circles upon boarding in The Bus or characters clipping through one another and vanishing in Bus Bound, the immersion often takes a hit.

Where does Bus Simulator 27 fit in? From current information, it aims for a fictional Mediterranean setting, Felicia Bay, with an apparent emphasis on diverse, rural landscapes. It promises expanded gameplay roles—including acting as a transit inspector—and features officially licensed vehicles from manufacturers like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz, which will be a major draw for enthusiasts.

Ultimately, there is no "perfect" bus simulator just yet. Bus Bound offers a charming, accessible approach, though it can become repetitive. The Bus provides depth and management complexity but struggles with technical refinement. While we wait to see how Bus Simulator 27 lands, you could always revisit OMSI 2—a 2013 title that remains the gold standard for pure simulation, despite its aging interface.
