The musical fantasy Buratino has stormed the Russian box office, crossing the 1 billion ruble mark a mere four days after its theatrical debut. This rapid success mirrors the performance of Sarik Andreasyan’s Prostokvashino, which similarly captivated audiences during the peak of the New Year holiday season.
Despite these impressive figures, Cheburashka 2 continues to hold its ground as the reigning champion of domestic cinema, having already amassed a staggering 2.3 billion rubles.
In contrast to the massive popularity of these reimagined fairy tales, Jim Jarmusch’s latest feature, Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, has seen a much more modest reception. Even with its accolades from the Cannes Film Festival, the film has only generated 17.4 million rubles. With over a week remaining in the winter holidays, both Buratino and Prostokvashino are well-positioned to potentially rival the record-breaking earnings of the Cheburashka sequel.
