Bungie Was Working on Five New Games at Once Before Sony Stepped In, Report Says
Before Sony acquired Bungie, the studio was actively developing five or six projects at the same time, according to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier. The lineup included Destiny 2, Marathon, and several other live-service games, though Bungie is currently working only on Marathon’s third season.
Speaking in a recent video, Schreier noted that Sony anticipated receiving multiple titles from Bungie scheduled for release over the following years. However, over time, “most of these projects fell apart” for various reasons.
At the time of the buyout, Sony viewed Bungie not only as the creator of Destiny, but also as an expert in building and supporting live-service games. The company planned to rely on Bungie’s expertise to evaluate its own internal multiplayer projects.

The subsequent years proved far more difficult for the studio. In June, Bungie announced major layoffs that significantly reduced its workforce. Restructuring filings indicated the cuts affected 292 positions in Washington state, including team members assigned to Destiny 2.
In July, Marathon game director Joe Ziegler left the studio. Del Chafe III assumed his responsibilities, while Julia Nardin stepped in as the project’s creative director. Bungie stated that both leaders possess the necessary background to guide the ongoing development of Marathon.
