Sony has commented on the situation surrounding Bungie’s Marathon, which — after a string of setbacks and lackluster tests — has come under increased scrutiny from investors.
At its latest financial briefing, Sony stated that it will implement necessary adjustments if the game’s launch does not meet expectations.
According to CFO Lin Tao, playtests involving 80,000 players took place from October 22 to 28, 2025. The outcomes were unsatisfactory, particularly with respect to gameplay and player engagement.
Marathon was originally scheduled for release in September 2025, but middling reviews and a plagiarism controversy prompted a postponement. Tao noted that Bungie’s team is “actively working on the project,” and the launch has been moved to 2026. It was also confirmed that Marathon remains one of the studio’s key projects.
Sony is exercising caution. If sales fall short of projections, the company said it will consider “appropriate adjustments” to improve the title and secure commercial success.
