Bungie Announces Immediate Permabans for Marathon Cheaters

Bungie is taking an uncompromising stance against foul play in its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. The studio recently declared that any player caught cheating will face an immediate, permanent ban with “no second chances.”

In a comprehensive security deep dive, Bungie outlined the technical framework designed to protect the game’s integrity. This “one-and-done” disciplinary policy is notably more aggressive than the systems used by contemporary titles. For example, Embark Studios employs a graduated penalty system for Arc Raiders, issuing 30-day and 60-day suspensions before eventually resorting to a permanent ban on the third offense. Bungie, however, is skipping the warnings entirely.

While the official Marathon social media accounts have doubled down on this zero-tolerance rhetoric, the specifics of the “permaban” remain slightly ambiguous. Bungie has yet to specify if these bans are limited to the user’s account or if they will utilize more robust deterrents like hardware ID (HWID) or IP-level blacklisting.

“The world of Tau Ceti IV is a dangerous place,” stated Eamon McKenzie, Marathon’s engineering director. “Success or failure should depend entirely on player skill and decision-making. For an extraction shooter to thrive, these competitive foundations are non-negotiable.” Technical director Chris Butcher echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the necessity of a “level playing field” where every piece of tactical information is accurate and untainted by exploits.

To support this vision, Bungie is implementing sophisticated server-side “fog of war” mechanics. This technology is designed to thwart “ESP” cheats and wall-hacks by hiding the location of loot and the contents of containers until a player is legitimately in range. Furthermore, the game will integrate the industry-standard BattlEye anti-cheat service.

Network stability is also a high priority. Bungie claims their new high-performance networking model, powered by dedicated servers, will effectively eliminate “favor the shooter” frustrations where players feel they’ve been hit while safely behind cover. This system aims to provide a more precise experience for those with stable internet connections.

Finally, the developer addressed the inevitable issue of mid-match disconnections. Marathon will feature a reconnection system allowing players to jump back into an active run. In the event of a total server failure or infrastructure glitch, players will be compensated by having their initial loadout restored, ensuring that technical hiccups don’t result in the permanent loss of hard-earned gear.
