Sony Pulls Its Last UHD Blu-ray Player From Sale in Japan
Sony has stopped selling the UBP-X700/K, its last standalone Ultra HD Blu-ray player in Japan. The only Sony device there that can now play these discs is the PS5 with a disc drive.
The move continues Sony’s gradual reduction of its physical media hardware lineup.
The UBP-X700/K was introduced in May 2025. According to the Japanese site Kunkoku, shipments ended on October 22. Sony’s official store confirms the player is sold out and that no new stock will arrive. The company has not announced a successor.
Sony previously discontinued the UBP-X800M2 player and dropped its standalone CD and SACD players. In February, it announced the end of Blu-ray recorder production. Standard Blu-ray and DVD players remain on sale for now.
At the moment, the PS5 with a disc drive is the only Sony device in Japan that can play Ultra HD Blu-ray movies.

Against this backdrop, reports have appeared that Sony may stop releasing new PlayStation games on discs. There is also discussion about whether the PS6 could ship without a traditional disc drive. For now, this is only speculation, though the shift toward digital distribution is gaining pace.
