BTS Reflects on Their Mature New Album and Relaxed Perspective on Winning a Grammy

The global phenomenon BTS is officially gearing up for their next chapter, with their highly anticipated album Arirang scheduled for a spring release. In a comprehensive cover feature for GQ published on Friday (Feb. 13), the group delved into what fans can expect from the upcoming record and addressed whether a Grammy victory remains a primary objective for them.

Set to debut on March 20, Arirang represents the septet’s first comprehensive studio effort since their 2020 Billboard 200 leader, Be. Suga revealed that this project highlights a “more seasoned perspective” for the group, embracing a vast spectrum of musical genres.

“I can share that this sound will deviate significantly from the BTS discography you’ve grown accustomed to,” Suga explained during the interview. He noted that while the K-pop industry can sometimes feel restrictive regarding the portrayal of life’s difficulties, he believes true artists must navigate both the triumphs and the tribulations. “I think as individuals, it’s vital to articulate both the light and the dark. This album is rooted in deep introspection; as we continue to evolve, our music reflects that change.”

The fervor surrounding the group’s return is unprecedented. For the better part of three years, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook have focused on solo endeavors while fulfilling their mandatory South Korean military service. The group officially reunited last summer during a Weverse livestream, where they promised the ARMY a new album and a massive 2026 world tour.

Despite their hiatus, BTS appears to have retained every bit of their global influence. However, their perspective on the Recording Academy seems to have shifted. After making history as the first K-pop act to earn nominations in 2021 and 2022, the group is approaching future accolades with a newfound sense of detachment.

“To be honest, I’m not sure,” RM admitted to GQ when asked about the importance of a Grammy win. He acknowledged the growing presence of K-pop in general categories, citing BLACKPINK’s ROSÉ as a recent milestone for soloists. “We will likely submit the album, but we aren’t consumed by an eager desperation for it anymore. If it happens, that’s wonderful; if not, we are perfectly at peace with that.”
