Bruce Springsteen Praises Healthcare Workers as Wife Patti Scialfa Reaches Remission from Blood Cancer

During this weekend’s gala for the Pan-Mass Challenge—an annual bike-a-thon benefiting cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute—Bruce Springsteen offered heartfelt praise for the medical professionals who have cared for his wife and fellow E Street Band member, Patti Scialfa, proudly sharing that she is currently in remission from multiple myeloma.

“We might be fashionably late, but here we are, and it is a true delight to join you,” Springsteen expressed in an eight-minute prerecorded address, reminiscing about when PMC founder and chairman Billy Starr first nudged him to participate in the charity ride back in 1984. Streaming acoustic guitar melodies from his home studio in New Jersey, he continued, “Ever since 1980, you have galvanized a movement that proves something extraordinary: everyday individuals possess the power to spark profound change. Because of that unwavering dedication, countless lives endure.”

Springsteen then spoke from the heart, disclosing to the audience that Scialfa—his wife since 1991 and the mother of their three adult children—has received ongoing care at Dana-Farber for multiple myeloma, a complex blood cancer characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal plasma cells.

“As many of you are aware, Patti has navigated life with multiple myeloma for upwards of eight years,” Springsteen noted in the video clip shared by a devoted fan. “Yet today, thankfully, she is enjoying remission.” Scialfa, 73, who received her diagnosis in 2018, previously opened up about her health journey in their acclaimed 2024 documentary, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Springsteen, 76, took a moment to honor the extraordinary physicians and nurses who have supported her—and countless other families—through the darkest hours.

“Like millions of households confronting a cancer diagnosis, we have discovered what every patient eventually realizes: hope wears a human face,” he reflected. “It belongs to the physician who refuses to abandon the search for answers. It belongs to the nurse who sits beside us in moments of fear, smoothing the rough edges of an arduous journey.” Championing the medical community’s relentless pursuit of innovation and compassionate care, Springsteen emphasized that scientific research transcends politics or budget lines. “Medical research is not merely an abstract concept or a line item on a spreadsheet; it is the absolute anchor of hope when hope feels entirely out of reach. When we lose sight of that truth, we abandon one another, and that is a devastating toll to pay.”

Reflecting on his decades-long career, Springsteen observed that he has spent nearly fifty years writing anthems for ordinary people who refuse to surrender, and for communities that decline to leave anyone behind. “To Patti and me, that has always represented the finest spirit of America,” he remarked. “Today, more than ever, the world needs everyday champions just like the dedicated participants of the PMC.”

In their 2024 documentary, Scialfa explained that her treatments compromised her immune system, requiring heightened caution in her daily life. While she occasionally steps onto the stage to perform a handful of tracks, this marks a profound adjustment for a foundational member of a touring powerhouse renowned for marathon-length live performances.

Following another expression of gratitude to the Dana-Farber team, “The Boss” performed an intimate, unplugged rendition of what he introduced as “one of my absolute favorite driving songs,” effortlessly transitioning into an acoustic delivery of “Born to Run.” Springsteen and the E Street Band officially concluded the American leg of their Land of Hope and Dreams tour on May 30 with a memorable performance in Philadelphia.
