Bots Overrun Fortnite Lobbies as New Season Begins

With the launch of Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, players are diving into a revitalized sandbox packed with fresh mechanics and an updated loot pool. While mastering these changes typically steepens the learning curve toward securing a Victory Royale, Epic Games appears to have engineered an artificial shortcut: significantly boosting the number of AI bots filling standard battle royale lobbies.

Investigating lobby metrics via Fortnite Discord tracking tools, X user Au5la revealed that human player density has drastically plummeted this season. Whereas previous matches typically featured between 58 and 65 authentic combatants, Chapter 7 Season 4 lobbies have reportedly dropped to a mere 25 real players per match—substituting the rest with automated opponents.

When Epic Games originally rolled out AI opponents in a 2019 update, their stated objective was to provide an accessible training ground for developing players. However, populating regular playlists overwhelmingly with bots undermines that premise, robbing players of the chance to test their mettle in authentic competitive encounters.

This dynamic often leads to a hollow gameplay loop: spending the majority of a match coasting through trivial AI eliminations, only to get instantly dismantled by the first seasoned squad in the final circles. This artificial buffer fosters a false sense of security, leaving players ill-equipped for high-stakes human skirmishes. As Au5la pointed out, the thrill of engaging actual opponents far eclipses the routine task of clearing out bot squads until the endgame—a frustration currently echoing across the community.

Lobby experiences remain polarized; while higher-tier brackets still contend with hyper-aggressive opponents, casual lobbies feel overrun by non-player targets. Interestingly, there are signs that AI behavior might be receiving stealth upgrades. During a chaotic firefight where my teammate was locked in a close-quarters duel and I was downed, our adversary was abruptly eliminated out of nowhere—the elimination feed credited the clutch snipe to our hired NPC, The Order.

Even if AI combat routines become more formidable, relying on bots remains a stopgap measure. A refined skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) algorithm, or an explicit toggle allowing players to opt out of AI lobbies entirely, would provide a far more rewarding path toward mastery than simply padding match numbers.
