Ben Affleck Calls Justice League Set Experience Awful

The Batman actor has accused the studio of cynical behavior surrounding Zack Snyder’s departure.

Ben Affleck called the reshoots for Justice League one of the worst experiences of his career during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actor admitted that working on the film killed his desire to direct a solo Dark Knight movie, even though he was initially excited about the idea:

“Working on Justice League left a very, very unpleasant impression for various reasons. Partly because of what was happening in my life, partly because of the tragedy that happened during that period. In addition, I saw how you shouldn’t make movies like that: when a studio conflicts with a director, it’s a huge mistake. That is exactly what ruined the picture.”

During production on Justice League, Zack Snyder experienced creative disagreements with Warner Bros. regarding the film’s direction. In March 2017, his daughter passed away, and in May the director announced his departure from the project. The studio assured the public at the time that Joss Whedon would merely finish the film while preserving Snyder’s original vision. However, the movie ultimately underwent massive reshoots that substantially altered its plot and tone.

According to Affleck, the atmosphere on set became extremely difficult after the director change. Furthermore, the actor believes Warner Bros. acted despicably by using Snyder’s family tragedy as a pretext to remove him from the job:

“The way that, in my opinion, it was used as a pretext is one of the most vile things I have ever seen. It was disgusting.”

In 2021, Snyder released a four-hour director’s cut of Justice League. Affleck spoke positively about it and admitted he was glad for the director, who finally managed to present the film the way he originally intended:

“I was very glad that Zack was able to release his version. […] I was very happy for him.”
