Insider Claims Both Seasons of God of War Will Be Filmed Back-to-Back
Amazon appears ready to make up for lost time after replacing Ryan Hurst with Dave Bautista.
The first and second seasons of the Prime Video series God of War are planned to be filmed back-to-back, according to insider DanielRPK. He stated that the second season will also replace Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus. Rumors regarding this change surfaced back in August when journalists discovered information about a casting search for older actors to play Atreus and Þrúðr.
The reasons for this decision remain unknown, but filming two seasons back-to-back could help recover lost time. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television began production on the first season in February 2026 and managed to shoot four episodes before Kratos actor Ryan Hurst tore his bicep. The actor required surgery, and his lengthy recovery threatened to delay the resumption of filming until 2027.
Hurst was ultimately replaced by Dave Bautista. The crew must now reshoot scenes featuring Kratos in the already completed episodes while continuing work on the remaining installments. According to media reports, filming with the new lead actor was scheduled to resume in Vancouver in mid-October, though it remains unconfirmed whether work has actually started.

Ronald D. Moore serves as the showrunner and writer for the series, having previously worked on Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. The adaptation is based on God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. The first season will follow the journey of Kratos and Atreus as they set out for the peak of the highest mountain to scatter Faye’s ashes, only to find themselves drawn into a conflict with Norse gods along the way.
A premiere date for God of War has not yet been announced.
