Battlefield 6 Offers Free-to-Play Week as Player Numbers Decline
Gamers will have the opportunity to experience Battlefield 6 at no cost during a week-long trial starting next week. From March 17 through March 24, players can sample the title’s offerings by downloading Battlefield RedSec—the game’s free-to-play battle royale component—to gain access to the limited-time event.
The trial period features three curated playlists tailored to different playstyles. The Nightfall playlist offers high-stakes versions of standard modes like Team Deathmatch set in total darkness, requiring the strategic use of night-vision optics. All-Out Warfare delivers the classic, large-scale objective gameplay the franchise is known for, while Casual Breakthrough provides a low-pressure environment for newcomers, utilizing a mix of human players and AI bots to fill the ranks.
This promotional window arrives during a volatile period for both the franchise and its developers. According to reports from IGN, Electronic Arts recently reduced headcount at several key studios, including DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive. Despite these internal shifts, Battlefield 6 enjoyed a massive commercial debut, moving 7 million units in its first three days and claiming the title of the top-selling game of 2025, even eclipsing Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
However, the initial excitement appears to be fading. SteamDB data reveals that active player counts have plummeted to a small fraction of the game’s 750,000 concurrent player peak seen at launch. User sentiment has also cooled, with the game currently holding a “Mixed” rating on Steam.
Common grievances among the community include a perceived focus on transient, seasonal content rather than permanent expansions. “I really want to support this game, but I wish the developers would prioritize long-term map design over fleeting events that don’t improve the core mechanics,” one reviewer noted. Additionally, players have voiced concerns over the game’s battle pass system and allegations surrounding the use of AI-generated artwork in certain cosmetic packs.
If you’re curious about the state of the game, the trial goes live on Tuesday, March 17, at 11 a.m. EDT. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect in the available playlists:
Nightfall
- Includes Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, and Domination. In these pitch-black scenarios, squads must utilize night-vision goggles or tactical attachments to navigate and engage enemies.
- Features the debut of the Hagental Base map.
All-Out Warfare
- Offers the iconic Conquest and Breakthrough modes, along with Escalation—a dynamic match type where boundaries shift and vehicle availability increases as the round progresses.
- The map rotation includes Season 2’s Contaminated and Hagental Base, Season 1’s Eastwood, and the launch map Mirak Valley.
Casual Breakthrough
- A relaxed entry point that still rewards players with progression and challenge completions. This mode is designed for those who prefer a less competitive atmosphere compared to standard PvP.
- Reduced player count: Matches consist of 16 human players (8 per team) supported by 32 AI bots (16 per side).
- Map availability: Hagental Base, Contaminated, and Eastwood.
