Charlie Puth’s headline performance at Madison Square Garden turned into a star-studded affair, with a series of surprise guest appearances that left the New York City crowd electrified. We were on the scene to capture the highlights of this unforgettable night.
Taking the stage this past Friday (May 29) as part of his ongoing Whatever’s Clever! world tour, Puth delivered a robust 23-song set. The evening was defined by high-profile collaborations, featuring cameos from icons including Art Garfunkel, Jimmy Fallon, Busta Rhymes, and gospel luminary Kirk Franklin.
The most poignant moment of the evening arrived when Art Garfunkel joined Puth for an intimate rendition of the Simon & Garfunkel classic, “The Boxer.” Reflecting on their musical bond, Garfunkel shared a touching sentiment with the audience, acknowledging Puth’s dedication to the craft: “He learned how to make his records from me and Paul. You’re my student.” A clearly moved Puth reciprocated the admiration, stating, “I am your student. The reason I’m here right now is because of the music you’ve written with Paul.”
The momentum shifted later in the set as Jimmy Fallon made a charismatic entrance, sporting sunglasses to help Puth belt out an anthem for the ages: Toto’s 1983 chart-topper, “Africa.” The camaraderie continued post-performance when Fallon presented Puth with a personalized New York Rangers jersey, marked with his name and the number 26.
Injecting an explosive dose of energy into the venue, Busta Rhymes took the stage to tear through a medley of his biggest tracks, including “Break Ya Neck,” “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” and the high-octane 2011 hit “Look at Me Now.” Before exiting, the hip-hop legend rallied the arena: “New York City, please make some noise for our brother, your brother, the incredible Charlie Puth.”
The night reached a spiritual high when Kirk Franklin joined the fray, elevating the atmosphere with powerful performances of “I Smile,” “Lean On Me,” and a spirited take on the gospel classic “Stomp.”
Following his triumphant New York residency, Puth continues his tour circuit in Atlantic City this Saturday (May 30) before moving through the U.S. and eventually crossing the Atlantic for his highly anticipated European leg.
