Ariana Grande shared a video Thursday (Sept. 17) showing her in the studio with producers Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh developing her song “Petal.”

The clip opens with Grande sitting on a couch wearing a pale pink knit head wrap. Martin sits nearby with a guitar while Salmanzadeh operates the computer.

Martin calls the take “Sick!” after listening to Grande test vocal melodies and rhythms by mumbling over the instrumental track.

“That’s pretty! I like those notes,” Grande agrees.

“the day petal was born,” the Grammy winner captions the clip.

Grande later added completed lyrics to those melodies. The finished track became the title song of her eighth studio album, petal, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in August and includes the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Hate That I Made You Love Me.”

The Wicked actress was performing on her Eternal Sunshine Tour when petal was released. She incorporated songs from the LP into her setlist and recorded live versions for a live album issued after the tour concluded in September.

Grande is now taking a planned period of downtime, though Billboard confirmed earlier in the month that she will fulfill press obligations for Focker-in-Law.
