Ariana Grande is standing firmly behind her latest visual project, “Petal,” which recently catapulted her into intense public discussions regarding her appearance and physical transformation.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, August 5, the pop superstar shared a carousel of behind-the-scenes snapshots from the set of the music video, which premiered just five days prior. Notably, Grande limited comments on the post. One photo captures her alongside director Christian Breslauer reviewing monitor angles while she is caked in prosthetic stage blood, while another shows a crew member sharing a lighthearted moment on set.

Released simultaneously with her eighth studio album, also titled Petal, the music video serves as a sharp commentary on relentless public scrutiny and body-shaming. Portraying an ambitious performer named Pepper, Grande navigates a grueling succession of auditions where industry executives demand constant modifications to her look—pushing everything from surgical enhancements to heightened sexualized appeal—before she ultimately retaliates against the perpetual critics with a chainsaw.

Ironically, online chatter regarding Grande’s physical appearance reached a fever pitch immediately following the video’s release, with numerous social media users expressing concern over her slender frame. Shortly after, a representative for the Victorious alum confirmed to People that she intended to take an extended hiatus from public-facing engagements following the conclusion of her Eternal Sunshine Tour in early September.

“She is eager to wrap up the tour on a healthy, joyful note, and subsequently take a well-earned break from the public eye, which has unfortunately fueled relentless commentary,” the statement explained.

However, addressing concertgoers the following evening at Chicago’s United Center, Grande clarified that her upcoming break—which includes stepping away from an anticipated West End revival of Sunday in the Park With George—was a proactive and carefully considered choice rather than a reactionary knee-jerk response.

“This was a deliberate decision I made quietly a long time ago, approached from a place of empowerment and thoughtfulness,” she told the audience. “Multiple truths can exist simultaneously. Everyone is entitled to establish boundaries, and human beings simply need to pause sometimes.”

Following remaining performances in Chicago, Grande is set to conclude her tour with a ten-night residency at London’s O2 Arena. The arena trek, mounted in support of her Billboard 200 chart-topping album Eternal Sunshine, officially wraps up on September 1.
