Ariana Grande is breathing life into an entirely fresh persona as she expands the artistic universe surrounding her upcoming album, Petal. The celebrated pop artist recently shared an intriguing visual teaser introducing her latest alter ego: an ambitious aspiring performer named Pepper.
Released on Tuesday (July 28), the retro-aesthetic, black-and-white promotional clip captures Grande walking into a bustling waiting room and approaching an indifferent receptionist. With boundless enthusiasm, she announces, “Hello, I’m Pepper. I’m here for the audition today.”
Unimpressed, the receptionist barely looks up before replying, “You and everyone else, honey,” prompting Pepper to grab a numbered ticket and wait her turn.
While the brief preview keeps exact plot details under wraps, it concludes with a striking title card confirming the release of Petal this Friday (July 31). Notably, the clip was filmed entirely in VistaVision, a classic widescreen celluloid format frequently used in iconic 1950s cinema. This cinematic throwback hints at a forthcoming narrative-driven music video or short film accompanying the Wicked star’s latest long-play record.
This immersive storytelling is a familiar artistic choice for Grande. She previously constructed an elaborate cinematic narrative for her 2024 chart-topping album, Eternal Sunshine, which commanded the Billboard 200 summit for three consecutive weeks. Across the cinematic visuals for singles like “The Boy Is Mine” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” alongside the companion short film Brighter Days Ahead, she portrayed Peaches—a character seeking specialized memory-erasing procedures as a direct homage to her beloved film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Thus far, listeners have only experienced a single musical taste of Petal: the phenomenal lead single “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” which triumphantly debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Grande has been treating audiences to live renditions of the track nightly during her ongoing Eternal Sunshine Tour, which recently wrapped up a successful three-night run in Boston before heading onward to Montreal.
Catch a glimpse of the captivating teaser below and officially meet Pepper.
