Anne Hathaway shares details on the new Princess Diaries movie
The Devil Wears Prada star, Anne Hathaway, has offered a fresh update on the highly anticipated third installment of Disney’s beloved fantasy-comedy franchise, The Princess Diaries.
According to the actress, the film’s development has finally reached a long-awaited “breakthrough” regarding its script.
“I’m currently in the middle of creating baby number three✱, in June, Hathaway announced her third pregnancy — Editor’s note), and that has somewhat dictated the timeline for The Princess Diaries 3. What I can share is that we’ve seemingly had a breakthrough with the story. I feel we are heading in the right direction. We’ve had to pivot the screenplay we were developing to align with this new vision—it’s not exactly what everyone wants to hear, but we are all genuinely thrilled,”
— Hathaway revealed during an appearance on SiriusXM. Based on Meg Cabot’s popular novel series, the original 2001 film, The Princess Diaries, chronicled the transformation of Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway), an ordinary San Francisco teenager, into the heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom of Genovia.
The first movie grossed $165 million worldwide and spawned a sequel in 2004. A third entry was officially greenlit in 2024, with Adele Lim (known for Joy Ride and Raya and the Last Dragon) tapped to direct.
Currently, Hathaway can be seen on screen in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Before the year concludes, she is also slated to appear in the sci-fi feature Flowervale Street and the thriller Verity.
