Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Minotaur” submitted for an Oscar by France

Andrey Zvyagintsev’s film Minotaur has been chosen as France’s official submission for the 2027 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The selection was made by a national committee following a rigorous vetting process that shortlisted five final contenders.

The narrative centers on the head of a prominent shipping firm whose world begins to unravel under the weight of domestic turmoil, professional setbacks, and a shifting national landscape. Starring Dmitry Mazurov and Iris Lebedeva, the Russian-language drama marks Zvyagintsev’s triumphant return to the Cannes Film Festival, where it was honored with the Grand Prix.

Zvyagintsev previously secured Oscar nominations representing Russia for his acclaimed works Leviathan and Loveless. The shortlist for the international category is scheduled for release on December 15, with the final nominees to be announced on January 21, 2027.
