An Era Officially Ends for PlayStation

PlayStation is significantly scaling back its PC expansion strategy for first-party titles, according to a recent update from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier. The announcement reportedly came directly from PlayStation studio business group CEO Hermen Hulst during an internal town hall meeting held this past Monday.

Schreier clarified that Sony’s narrative-driven, single-player experiences will henceforth remain strictly PlayStation exclusives. This move aligns with earlier industry whispers from March, confirming that Sony is pivoting away from the model of bringing high-profile hits like Marvel’s Spider-Man or Ghost of Tsushima to PC platforms. Consequently, highly anticipated titles such as Ghost of Yōtei, Saros, and Marvel’s Wolverine will be tethered to the PlayStation 5 hardware, necessitating the console for anyone looking to jump into the action.

Interestingly, Sony’s commitment to the PC market remains intact for its multiplayer endeavors. Bungie’s Marathon saw a multiplatform debut, including an Xbox launch, and data from industry analysts suggests that roughly 70% of its player base is engaging with the title via PC. Furthermore, the upcoming Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, is still slated for a PC release this August.

It appears that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Kena: Scars of Kosmora may serve as the final instances of PlayStation-published single-player games making the transition to computer platforms, barring any surprises. Both titles were already firmly established for PC release when they were initially unveiled.

The strategic reversal likely stems from lackluster performance metrics. A report published in late 2025 by Alinea Analytics highlighted that Steam sales for major PS5 ports—including God of War Ragnarök and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2—failed to meet the momentum of their predecessors. It seems the initial fascination with playing iconic PlayStation mascots on PC has waned; core fans dedicated to these franchises are increasingly opting to experience them on the native hardware as soon as possible.

Ultimately, if you are looking forward to the visceral combat of Marvel’s Wolverine or the mysterious allure of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a PlayStation 5 will be your only gateway to those worlds.
