Amazon’s Mass Effect TV Series Still in Development After EA Closes BioWare

Comment Views: 0

Wednesday was a rough day for Mass Effect fans. EA announced that it is closing its development studio BioWare and canceling the fifth game in the sci-fi role-playing series. The franchise isn’t vanishing entirely, though. Amazon MGM has not pulled the plug on its upcoming Mass Effect TV series, which will move forward.

Mass Effect 5 was announced in 2020 and was in the early stages of development. The EA buyout was finalized in August 2026. The company now belongs to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners and the investment firm Silver Lake. The deal left the future of the Mass Effect series uncertain. Former EA employees said the PIF would shift the company’s focus to sports games and would likely leave behind struggling studios such as BioWare, along with their IPs. That is exactly what happened.

EA has shut down BioWare and canceled the Mass Effect game that was in development. Many fans assumed the news meant the end of Mass Effect altogether, including Amazon MGM’s TV series, which has been in the works since 2024. That doesn’t appear to be the case. According to IGN, the Mass Effect series being made for Prime Video is still in development. The people attached to it remain on board, including showrunners Doug Jung and Daniel Casey, and producers Mike Gamble, Karim Zreik, Ari Arad and Jessica Jones.

Mass Effect is a beloved sci-fi universe with deep world-building and an emotional story that lets players form strong bonds with its complex characters. Its continuation now depends on EA being willing to sell the IP and on another company being willing to pick it up. The TV series will not follow Commander Shepard and the Normandy crew. Still, the universe’s lore is rich enough for writers to create a new protagonist and new characters that catch fans’ interest. If the show builds enough hype, a strong offer for the franchise might follow.

Nov. 7, known as N7 Day, is a special date for Mass Effect fans, since announcements and reveals about the franchise usually arrive then. This year’s N7 Day will be a sad one. Maybe we will still get some TV series details to cheer us up.
