Alien Deathstorm Is the Most Appropriately Named Game I’ve Ever Played
Combine a swarm of extraterrestrial creatures, a desolate extraterrestrial outpost shrouded in peril, and a howling atmospheric tempest, and you get Alien Deathstorm. Following a half-hour hands-on session at Gamescom 2026, it is evident that developer Rebellion—renowned for their work on Sniper Elite, Zombie Army, and Atomfall—has another potential triumph on their hands.
In Alien Deathstorm, players find themselves thrust directly into a devastated off-field colony grappling with an overwhelming alien infestation. Your primary objectives are simple yet daunting: unravel the mystery behind the outpost’s downfall, evacuate any remaining survivors, and escape before it’s too late. Of course, execution is far more complicated than intention, especially with a ferocious tempest raging outside and hordes of relentless predators closing in.

Even so, this project represents a distinct departure from Rebellion’s previous catalogue. While their historical output heavily features tactical shooters—where titles like Sniper Elite and Zombie Army demand deliberate, methodical pacing—and Atomfall embraces role-playing mechanics that grant players the freedom to bypass altercations entirely, Alien Deathstorm delivers a much faster, action-oriented experience.
During the preview, restricted strictly to a submachine gun, tearing through swarms of classic bipedal extraterrestrials proved remarkably gratifying despite the surprising absence of weapon recoil. The featured scenario placed me in a late-game assignment requiring traversal across multiple distinct zones surrounding a failing reactor to restore its functionality.
True to Rebellion’s design philosophy, however, Alien Deathstorm refuses to overextend its ambitions regarding sheer scale. In a discussion with studio producer Martin Willingham, it was revealed that the complete playthrough will span a focused 8 to 10 hours. For a title incorporating robust crafting systems, weapon customization, and open-ended, sandbox-style environments, that runtime might initially appear surprisingly brief.
“Certainly from Sniper Elite, we incorporated numerous structural foundations and level design principles into Alien Deathstorm,” Willingham elaborated. “When you contrast this with our older titles that leaned toward linear corridor shooters, this environment is far more expansive. We want to empower players to chart their own pathways and make deliberate choices regarding navigation, rather than forcing them down a rigid, predetermined corridor.”
Significant inspiration was also drawn from Atomfall: “Players really connected with that investigative approach to objectives, which challenges them to deduce solutions independently rather than handing out immediate answers. You can address objectives however you see fit, diagnosing colony malfunctions and determining the optimal method for resolution.”
Initially adopting an aggressive, all-out offensive strategy during the demo—largely because the hostile fauna seemed intent on immediate destruction—revealed an intricate reactionary system. While specific scripted encounters occur regardless of player actions, such as navigating a pitch-black subterranean substation reboot, optional mob engagements are directly influenced by player behavior. A subsequent encounter involving massive, apex-tier monstrosities only materialized due to my previous reckless aggression.
Consequently, adopting a methodical, stealth-oriented playstyle yields an atmospheric tension reminiscent of classic survival horror like Alien. Players can choose to maneuver quietly around threats or engage head-on, balancing the risk of drawing unwanted attention with the thrill of combat.
Within a contemporary gaming industry dominated by endlessly sprawling campaigns, Alien Deathstorm mirrors titles like Fable by prioritizing a tighter, more concise runtime. Ultimately, quality supersedes length, and Rebellion appears poised to deliver substance in abundance.
Alien Deathstorm is scheduled for launch in Spring 2027 across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
