AI movie starring Yura Borisov finds new distributor

NEON has officially secured the U.S. distribution rights for Artificial, the latest feature from director Luca Guadagnino. The film features an appearance by Oscar nominee Yura Borisov.

The movie is slated for a theatrical release before the year’s end, positioning it for the upcoming awards circuit. Details regarding a potential release in Russia remain unconfirmed.

The project was originally under the umbrella of Amazon MGM, which relinquished the rights for undisclosed reasons. Industry insiders suggest that the film offers a scathing critique of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (portrayed by Andrew Garfield) and presents a grim outlook on a future overshadowed by AI-driven tyranny. Notably, Amazon committed $50 billion to the advancement of OpenAI this past June.

Borisov portrays Ilya Sutskever, the former Chief Scientist of OpenAI. The supporting cast includes Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Cooper Koch, and Ike Barinholtz, who steps into the role of Elon Musk. The screenplay was penned by Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich.
