Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo has moved decisively to build its own film franchise.
A new rumor about Nintendo’s plans to adapt its franchises suggests the company is developing an animated Donkey Kong feature. Insider MyTimeToShineHello claims the project is tentatively slated for a 2028 release — coming after the adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, which is expected to premiere in May 2027. Insider Daniel Richtman has previously hinted at a Donkey Kong film as well, though he offered no specifics at the time.
Nintendo has already told investors it intends to produce adaptations on an ongoing basis. A corporate presentation referenced “other projects” in development, and it appears the Donkey Kong adaptation could be the first among them.
Donkey Kong has appeared on screen before — in the Mario film, where he was voiced by Seth Rogen — but the character has not been announced for the upcoming sequel. Rogen said a year ago that he would like to see a Donkey Kong Country adaptation, calling the game “perfect for a family adventure about friendship and freedom.”
