Variety has an exclusive report naming the actor chosen for the leading role in Resurrection of Christ — the follow-up to the biblical drama The Passion of the Christ.
Taking over from Jim Caviezel is Finnish performer Jaakko Ohtonen (The Last Kingdom); he will portray Jesus Christ in both installments of Resurrection. The part of Mary Magdalene, previously played by Monica Bellucci, has been assigned to Cuban actress Mariela Garriga (Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning).
The cast is further bolstered by Kasia Smutniak, Pierluigi Pasino, Riccardo Scamarcio and Rupert Everett. Mel Gibson will return behind the camera as director. Lionsgate plans to release both films in April 2027.
