Actor Cast as Alex for A Minecraft Movie Sequel

The burgeoning “Minecraft Cinematic Universe” has officially found its Alex. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary have tapped Kirsten Dunst to star alongside Jack Black in the upcoming sequel to A Minecraft Movie. As reported by Deadline, this casting fulfills a wish the actress publicly shared months ago regarding her desire to join a high-profile, family-friendly blockbuster.

Last summer, while promoting Roofman, Dunst told Town and Country that she was eager to take on a role in a major commercial hit, specifically mentioning a potential Minecraft follow-up. Her children are reportedly massive fans of the first installment, making the role a perfect bridge between her career and family life. Dunst is a veteran of the tentpole format, with a resume that includes the original Spider-Man trilogy, Jumanji, and the 2024 hit Civil War. She joins a franchise with immense momentum; the first film earned a staggering $960 million globally, according to BoxOfficeMojo.

Jared Hess is returning to the director’s chair for the sequel and will co-write the script with Chris Galletta. While the official title has yet to be revealed, the production is expected to bring back its core ensemble. Jack Black will reprise his role as the legendary Steve, alongside Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. Supporting cast members Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Emma Myers are also anticipated to return for the next adventure.

Alex’s arrival was subtly hinted at during a post-credits scene in the original film, though the character’s face remained off-screen. Originally introduced to the video game in 2014, Alex was designed as a default female skin to provide more diversity to the player base. With her signature red hair, ponytail, and thinner character model, she has since become as iconic as Steve himself, eventually earning a spot as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The sequel to A Minecraft Movie is currently slated for a theatrical release on July 23, 2027. In the meantime, fans can catch the original film on HBO Max.
