A$AP Rocky Sets Sights on City Hall: Open to Rap Battle with Mayor Mamdani

A$AP Rocky has never been one to shy away from a challenge, whether he’s commanding a stage or eyeing a future in politics. The Harlem-born artist recently addressed the prospect of a political showdown—or a lyrical one—against NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
During a candid conversation featured in his Vibe cover story, released Tuesday (June 2), the rapper—born Rakim Mayers—offered a dismissive chuckle when asked if he would ever go toe-to-toe with the mayor in a rap battle. “Mamdani wants to battle me?” Rocky questioned. “I’m stunned he’d even throw my name out there.”
“He’s not on my level,” Rocky asserted. “Honestly, I’m already eyeing his seat. Give it four years, and you’ll be looking at Mayor Mayers.”
Beyond the bravado, Rocky emphasized that his interest in the mayoral office is genuine. “Whether it’s a freestyle duel or a formal debate, I’m ready. I have a real vision for the city that raised me. I’m serious about this—I’m running for mayor, and the people are going to see what I can really do.”
Mayor Mamdani, who secured his position last November, has made waves as New York’s most progressive leader to date. Interestingly, he is believed to be the first mayor in city history to have a recorded rap background, having released an EP back in 2016 under the alias Young Cardamom.
Rocky’s political aspirations aren’t entirely new; he teased the concept during an interview with Esquire earlier this year. “There are systemic issues that demand attention and meaningful change,” he shared in January. “I believe I have the heart for the people. By 2029, I’m calling on everyone to vote for Mayor Mayers.”
The rapper continues to balance his multifaceted career, following the massive success of his latest album, Don’t Be Dumb, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this past January.
