Before Ryan Coogler’s anticipated X-Files reboot breathes new life into the franchise, Disney is revisiting the past. The studio has officially announced that The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Director’s Cut will arrive on Disney Plus on June 11, offering fans a fresh perspective on the 2008 thriller.

Chris Carter, the visionary behind The X-Files and director of the 2008 feature, first teased this restoration last June during an appearance on David Duchovny’s podcast, Fail Better. During the discussion, Carter admitted that he had been forced to soften the film’s tone significantly. While he originally envisioned a grittier, R-rated experience, studio mandates for a PG-13 rating—followed by additional pressure from censors—diluted his initial vision.

“I now have the opportunity to revisit the project and craft the chilling narrative I always intended,” Carter shared on the podcast. “This isn’t just about releasing a director’s cut for the sake of it. It’s about finally bringing to life the vision that existed on the page but never fully made it to the screen.”

While previous home video releases featured an “Extended Cut,” that version offered only minor adjustments—mostly prolonging certain shots, particularly those focusing on the film’s grim depictions of body mutilation in rural West Virginia.

Though Disney has yet to provide further specifics regarding the content of this new version, Carter’s comments suggest this will be a more substantial reimagining, finally realizing the dark, intense atmosphere that he had originally intended for the cinematic outing.
