A New TCG Challenger Aims to Revolutionize Horror the Way Magic Did Fantasy
The eternal feud between Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster is about to escalate into a lethal confrontation—and this time, it doesn’t require a Hollywood blockbuster to come to life. While the Dark Universe may have struggled on the silver screen, its legacy is being resurrected in a bold new format.
Universal Pictures and Experiences has announced a strategic partnership with global toy titan Spin Master to develop a high-stakes trading card game (TCG) that subjugates horror’s most enduring icons to gladiatorial combat. Unveiled on Feb. 3, the project—titled Hellbreak—is being co-produced by Ghost Galaxy, the innovative tabletop studio led by the creators of KeyForge.
According to the official announcement, the game functions as a “Monster Sandbox,” providing a brutal arena where the most feared entities in cinematic history fight to the finish. Drawing from the deep well of Universal’s horror catalog, the debut set will feature an expansive roster of characters. This includes the foundational classics that defined the genre, the slasher icons of the late 20th-century renaissance, and the modern architects of the macabre who continue to haunt contemporary audiences. Fans can expect to see heavyweights like Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and The Mummy leading the charge. For many, this feels like the spiritual Dark Universe reboot enthusiasts have been clamoring for.
Spin Master has hinted that this debut is merely the opening chapter. They envision Hellbreak as an unprecedented crossover ecosystem, eventually incorporating nightmare-inducing figures from various major studios. While the full mechanical details remain shrouded in mystery, the potential for expansion is vast. Given Universal’s existing relationship with Blumhouse Productions, it is highly conceivable that characters from franchises like M3GAN, The Purge, or Insidious could eventually join the fray. What we do know is that the game will utilize a system of “character factions” to drive its strategic depth.
“Hellbreak was engineered to be perilous, cinematic, and infinitely replayable,” explained Christian T. Petersen, CEO of Ghost Galaxy and the game’s design lead. “Every creature and mechanic is meticulously crafted to trigger visceral, unforgettable moments at the table—the kind of experiences that linger in a player’s mind long after the final card is played.”
Horror aficionados won’t have to wait an eternity to enter the arena. Hellbreak is currently scheduled for a worldwide release in the fall of 2026, with further glimpses into the gameplay and haunting artwork expected to surface in the coming months.
