The blocky cinematic universe has officially found its Alex. Kirsten Dunst is set to join the cast of the upcoming sequel to A Minecraft Movie, as first reported by Deadline. The casting marks a full-circle moment for the actress, who previously expressed interest in joining a high-profile franchise for both professional and personal reasons.
Last year, while promoting her film Civil War, Dunst noted in an interview with Town & Country that she was eager to take on a major commercial project. Citing her children’s love for the property, Dunst—a veteran of blockbusters like the original Spider-Man trilogy and Jumanji—seemed to manifest the role. The first film was a massive financial success for Warner Bros. and Legendary, earning over $960 million at the global box office.
Director Jared Hess will return to helm the sequel, co-writing the script with Chris Galletta. While the film’s official title remains under wraps, fans can expect the return of Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. The addition of Alex was teased in a post-credits scene of the original film, though her identity was kept hidden at the time.
In the source material, Alex was introduced to the Minecraft video game over ten years ago to provide a more diverse range of default player avatars. With her signature orange ponytail and leaner build, she has since become a cornerstone of the franchise, even appearing as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate alongside Steve.
The sequel to A Minecraft Movie is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 23, 2027. In the meantime, the first installment is available for streaming on Max.
