World of Warcraft Officially Brings Gamepad Controls to Blizzard’s MMO Forever
Among the standout announcements at BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard unveiled World of Warcraft Forever, a fresh iteration of the enduring massively multiplayer online role-playing game designed to deliver a novel classic experience. While rumors of a “Classic Plus” version had circulated for years—with partial leaks surfacing beforehand—the sheer depth and ambition of World of Warcraft Forever caught the community completely off guard.
Yet, the biggest revelation on the convention floor wasn’t just the game itself, but how it’s played: for the first time in franchise history, World of Warcraft is receiving robust, native game controller support. Traditionally confined to keyboard and mouse setups requiring complex keybindings for spells and abilities, the MMO translates surprisingly well to a gamepad.
However, players shouldn’t expect World of Warcraft Forever to land on dedicated consoles or handheld gaming PCs anytime soon. According to the development team, bringing the game to other platforms was never the primary objective behind this new control scheme.
The Vision Behind Controller Support in World of Warcraft Forever
“We’ve envisioned *World of Warcraft Forever* as a fundamental third pillar for the franchise,” explained Nora Valletta, lead software engineer on the project. “Because we are introducing so much new content, it felt like an ideal moment to rethink not just the gameplay mechanics, but also how players physically interact with the virtual world.”
“A recurring theme across our new features is maximizing player agency,” Valletta continued. “Whether it’s the toggle between standard and high-definition character models, or choosing between a faithful classic mode and a streamlined modern approach upon logging in, gamepad support simply offers another avenue for interface customization.”
Valletta noted that after spending an entire workday at a desk crafting *World of Warcraft*, unwinding on a couch with a controller provides a welcome change of pace. “It’s all about giving users options,” she stated. “We’ve engineered the system so you can transition between inputs on the fly. If I’m at my desktop and feel like plugging in a controller, it immediately registers—no hassle required.”
“We take immense pride in expanding our accessibility suites to accommodate diverse playstyles and physical needs,” added Tim Jones, lead game designer for *Forever*. “From advanced colorblind settings to integrated screen narration, robust controller integration serves as another cornerstone of our accessibility initiatives, allowing people to experience Azeroth on their own terms.”
Designed to support both PlayStation and Xbox controllers, the control scheme has undergone extensive internal playtesting, according to Valletta.
While acknowledging that dedicated fans have engineered custom gamepad solutions for years—and that competing MMOs have offered similar features—Valletta emphasized that the team wanted an original approach. *”I used to play Final Fantasy 14 with a PS4 controller,”* she admitted, *”but we didn’t want to simply replicate existing systems. We wanted a blank slate to figure out what genuinely felt organic, addressing our initial concerns about whether healing in raids would prove too cumbersome or imprecise.”*
Drawing on insights from internal Blizzard teams with prior experience in controller adaptation, the developers devised an intuitive layout. Friendly targets map effortlessly to the left bumper, while hostile targets utilize the right. Clicking the left analog stick triggers auto-run, and pressing the right stick pings environmental objects. Most spells and combat actions reside on the D-pad and face buttons, with triggers acting as modifiers to cycle through extended action bars. The result is surprisingly sophisticated.
Adventurers will soon have the chance to test these controls firsthand when the World of Warcraft Forever beta kicks off on September 17. The wait for the complete experience will be brief, with the official launch slated for November 4.
