“Wonder Man” canceled after first season

Marvel Studios and Disney+ have scrapped plans for a follow-up season of the series Wonder Man. According to Variety, the show will not move forward with a second season, effectively reversing the official renewal announced by the studio earlier this spring.

Reports indicate that development on the sequel stalled several months ago. The writers’ room for the second season was never convened, and the creative team was released from their contractual obligations. The specific reasons behind the cancellation have not yet been disclosed.

The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an actor who transforms into the superhero Wonder Man. The cast also features Ben Kingsley, who reprised his role as Trevor Slattery from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite favorable critical reception and an Emmy nomination for Abdul-Mateen, the series failed to secure a long-term spot on the Disney+ slate.

The cancellation of Wonder Man is part of an ongoing overhaul of Marvel Studios’ television strategy. In recent years, the studio has significantly reduced its volume of output and adopted a more discerning approach to developing new projects for the streaming platform.
