Apple continues to involve the original authors in its screen adaptations.
Actor Callum Turner, who portrays Case in Apple TV+’s forthcoming adaptation of Neuromancer, told ScreenRant that William Gibson is actively engaged in the series’ development. Turner emphasized that no one understands the story better than its creator — “it’s his book, his vision” — and the production consults Gibson at every major stage.
First published in 1984, Neuromancer is widely regarded as a cornerstone of cyberpunk. The novel anticipated numerous technological ideas — from virtual reality to artificial intelligence — and has had a profound influence on the evolution of science fiction. Several attempts to bring the book to screen have been made over the years, but none succeeded.
The project is now being developed by Apple TV+. As ScreenRant notes, Gibson’s direct involvement nearly guarantees the series will stay true to the source and thoughtfully adapt everything from subtle character details to its speculative concepts.
Apple’s approach is becoming a template for how to handle adaptations of beloved science-fiction works. Previously the streamer cleared every change on the series “Shelter” with the novel’s author Hugh Howey, and for “Dark Matter” they brought Blake Crouch on board to serve as showrunner.
The first season will comprise 10 episodes. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
